The Global Stevia Institute supports METCO® with Science-based Information about Stevia

San Antonio TX., METCO FOODS INC., producer of SVETIA® CALORIE FREE SWEETENER, made from stevia, the zero calorie sweetener extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana, has a collaboration agreement with the Global Stevia Institute (GSI), the authoritative, science-based resource for information on stevia. The GSI provides METCO® with all the necessary scientific information about stevia, as well as images and recipes.

The GSI was launched in June 2010, as an educational resource for health professionals, consumers, food and beverage manufacturers, public affairs leaders and scientists. Since then, the GSI has worked internationally to build awareness about the safety and benefits of stevia, with science-based information, through education and outreach programs. The GSI is advised by an international board of leading scientists and health professionals.

To further enhance awareness and education of stevia, the GSI partners with companies and organizations throughout the world to support stevia education efforts.

It is of the upmost importance for the GSI to be transparent in all their efforts for maintaining trust in their stevia information supply more broadly, so they have an open and honest communicate with all of their audiences from partners to consumers.

Stevia is a plant native to South America. It is part of the sunflower family and its leaves are naturally sweet. In fact, the indigenous people chew them for their sweet taste and use them to naturally sweeten beverages. They contain different sweet tasting components, scientifically called steviol glycosides, which can be anywhere from 200 to 350 times sweeter than sugar – but all without calories.

To release the sweetness, the steviol glycosides are extracted and purified like other ingredients you may commonly use, such as cane sugar or natural vanilla extract. At the end of the process, the sweet components are the exact same compounds as the ones originally found in the leaf.
