Stevia: A Safe and Sweet Choice
San Antonio TX. The safety of any ingredient for human consumption is paramount. According to the Global Stevia Institute (GSI), stevia, a natural origin, no-calorie sweetener, offers many benefits including the safety support of rigorous scientific research and evaluation. Today, stevia is used around the world in thousands of foods and beverages. SVETIA® is a non-calorie sweetener made from stevia extract, obtained from a co-crystallization process patented by METCO FOODS INC., a subsidiary of METCO S.A. The GSI says that “the safety of stevia for human consumption has been established through rigorous peer-reviewed research.” Most global regulatory organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization’s Joint Expert Committee on Food Additive (JECFA), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), have determined stevia to be safe for consumption.
Based on this evidence of more than 200 expert studies that attest to the safety of stevia, legal food authorities have established an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for stevia. The ADI is defined as “the amount of a substance that people can consume on a daily basis during their whole life without any appreciable risk to health.” According to GSI, the ADI was set for steviol glycosides, the sweet components extracted from stevia leaf, and is expressed as steviol equivalents of 0-4 mg/kg of body weight per day. This equates to approximately 12 mg of high purity stevia extracts/kg of body weight per day. The ADI was set by reviewing many research studies, including those demonstrating that daily doses of steviol glycosides up to 1,000 mg/person/day were well-tolerated by people with normal glucose metabolism and people with type-2 diabetes.
Stevia leaf extract has been rigorously tested in over 200 scientific studies and given the stamp of approval by multiple regulatory organizations around the globe. In some countries, crude stevia extracts or whole stevia plant leaves are often sold as dietary supplements, but the GSI states that only high purity stevia leaf extract has been evaluated and approved for use as an ingredient in food and beverages by multiple regulatory agencies throughout the world.
It has been found that when stevia is ingested, it passes through the body without effect because steviol glycosides are poorly absorbed. This fact makes stevia a safe product for human consumption, with no-calorie impact. The GSI explains that the steviol glycosides are broken down into a compound called steviol glucuronide, through a series of digestive processes. The steviol glucuronide is then removed from the body in the urine with insignificant caloric impact.
