Stevia Extract —An Instrument for Calorie Reduction

San Antonio TX. According to the Global Stevia Institute (GSI), leading health and nutrition organizations around the world have stated that stevia extract is as a safe, acceptable option to reduce calories in foods and beverages and help manage weight.

GSI mentions that the International Food Information Council Foundation (IFIC)concluded that the zero calorie sweetener stevia does not cause increased appetite or preference for sweet tasting foods and that stevia offers a way for people to decrease overall carbohydrate intake.

The European Food Information Council (EUFIC) indicated that stevia extract is a safe and, in many cases, a beneficial dietary component and that it provides a choice for people who wish to consume fewer calories and maintain a healthy weight.

In 2012, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) highlighted stevia extract as one of seven non-nutritive sweeteners approved for use in the United States.

Also in 2012, the American Heart Association said that non-nutritive sweeteners such as stevia extract, are safe when consumed within the FDA-established daily intake levels, and may help people reach and maintain a healthy body weight.

Non-caloric sweeteners are known as high intensity sugar substitutes, because they sweeten more, they are consumed in small quantities and they make it possible to produce or consume foods with less caloric input.

All sugar substitutes on the market have two main components:

1) The high is present to a lesser extent because of their high sweetening power (at least 200 times sweeter than sugar).

2) A bulking agent or “carrier” which, as its name implies, allows a product of suitable size and flavor to the consumer. The most used ones are: sugar, dextrose (glucose), maltodextrins (which are converted to glucose) and polyols (isomalt, erythritol).

SVETIA® is a non-calorie sweetener made from stevia extract.  SVETIA® uses as high intensity sweetener a purified extract of stevia’s sweet-tasting components, scientifically called steviol glycosides, which can be anywhere from 200 to 350 times sweeter than sugar – but all without calories.

SVETIA® uses cane sugar as a bulking agent or carrier because of its natural origin and because its glycemic index is lower than the one of dextrose and maltodextrin, providing an excellent profile of flavor and natural sweetness. Cane sugar as bulking agent provides so few calories per serving that SVETIA® Calorie-Free Sweetener meets the Food and Drug Administration’s criteria for no-calorie foods (less than 5 calories per serving).

You can find SVETIA® with stevia extract in all HEB supermarkets across Texas.
