Stevia Is Well Accepted in Southeast Asia

San Antonio TXStevia, as a zero-calorie natural origin sweetener, can be part of a healthful diet and lifestyle.  It can reduce added sweet calories to lower total caloric intake without sacrificing taste in a wide variety of foods and beverages. The safety of high purity steviaextracts is supported by the rigorous scientific research and the evaluation necessary for an ingredient to be approved for human consume today. Therefore, stevia is currently taking off as a sweetener in foods and beverages all around the world.

The Global Stevia Institute (GSI) has worked internationally to build awareness of steviathrough education and outreach programs. According to GSI, with the arrival of food and beverages products sweetened with stevia to Southeast Asia, a study was performed among 1000 consumers from each of these countries –Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. The consumers were asked about their impressions about stevia, which were overwhelmingly positive, including safety and trust perceptions of this zero-calorie natural origin sweetener, relative to other commonly used sweeteners.

The South Asian consumers were asked about different stevia attributes such as being good for a healthy lifestyle, helpful for managing weight, safe for adults, safe for children, safe for diabetics and great taste, among others, and in most of them the results were above 50% positive in favor of stevia. The majority of consumers find the concept of stevia sweetened products appealing. Across most of the countries, about 80 percent of consumers would purchase a food or beverage product containing stevia.

“In general, Asian consumers lean towards naturally derived and natural origin products,” said Dr. Priscilla Samuel, Director of the GSI. “So it is interesting to note, that the results of these study show that when Asian consumers are aware of stevia as a sweetener, they are favorably inclined and are interested in incorporating it into their diets and lifestyle.” Samuel added that overweight, obesity and diabetes continue to be on the rise in Asia. “Reduced-calorie, reduced-sugar food products such as those sweetened with stevia can help reduce energy or calorie intakes, which can help with weight management, special for those who are looking for natural-origin sweetener options,” she said.
