Stevia Leaf Extract Authorized in India for Use in Food and Beverage

San Antonio TX. In November, 2015, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India, published that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) approved the use of high purity steviol glycosides extracted from the stevia leaf for use in several food and beverage products, such as dairy, fruit nectars, jams, jellies and marmalade, ice lollies, ready to eat cereals, beverages, chewing gum and tabletop sweeteners.

They stated that  high purity steviol glycosides  may be marketed as tabletop sweetener in tablet form powder and liquid which may contain seven mg as steviol equivalent per 100 mg. with carrier or filler.

The FSSAI defines steviol glycosid as a “white to light yellow powder, odorless or having a slight characteristic odor, which is about 200 – 300 times sweeter than sucrose. The product is obtained from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana bertoni plant. The leaves are extracted with hot water and the aqueous extract is passed through an adsorption resin to trap and concentrate the component steviol glycosides. The resin is washed with a solvent alcohol to release the glycosides and the product is recrystallized from methanol or aqueous ethanol. Ion exchange resins may be used in the purification process.” They states that the final product may be spray-dried.

According to the FSSAI, the steviol glycosides of main interest for them are stevioside and rebaudioside A because of their sweetening property. There are other associated glycosides including rebaudioside B, rebaudioside C, rebaudioside D, rebaudioside F, dulcoside A, rubusoside and steviolbioside, which are generally present in preparations of steviol glycosides at levels lower than stevioside or rebaudioside A.

According to the Global Stevia Institute, the FSSAI is considering an amendment of their food safety and standards regulations which may be finalized in the year 2016.  When finalized, it will open the door for the use of naturally sourced high purity steviol glycosides in additional food categories such as; fruit and vegetable preparations, snacks and savories and many more.
