Stevia Extract Can Be Part of a Well-Balanced Diet

San Antonio TX.  The Global Stevia Institute (GSI) states that stevia extract can be part of a well-balanced diet. Stevia extract is a zero calorie sweetener of natural origin, extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. This plant has been used for years by the Guaraní people from Brazil and Paraguay, to sweeten their local mate tea and as medicine. Currently the sweet compounds of the stevia plant, scientifically called steviol glycosides, can be extracted from the leaf and can be used in products to achieve a very similar taste of sucrose, but with no calorie intake.

According to the GSI, high purity stevia leaf extract, the ingredient form approved for food and beverage by regulatory authorities, contains 95% or more of these steviol glycosides. It is this high purity form that has been rigorously tested in more than 200 scientific studies and approved for human consumption by multiple major regulatory organizations around the world.

Dr. Priscilla Samuel, from the GSI, states that stevia extract, as being zero calorie, is currently being used as a tool to reduce energy and sugar intake, which can contribute to reduce overweight. The reason for stevia extract being zero calorie is because steviol glycosides are poorly absorbed in the body and pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the stomach and small intestines, fully intact. After being metabolized, it is excreted in the urine. Several research studies on stevia extract have shown there is no accumulation of steviaextract in the body during metabolism. So, we can conclude that stevia extract has zero calories essentially due to this poor absorption in the digestive tract.

Nowadays, stevia extract can be found in hundreds of foods and beverage products around the world. You may find stevia extract-sweetened teas, soft drinks, juices, yogurt, soymilk, granola and snack bars, and baked goods. You can also also found it in snacks, cereals, salad dressings, savory sauces, alcoholic beverages, chewing gum, canned fruit and jams, confections, and as a table top sweetener. With such a wide variety you can find plenty of delicious options to fit within your personal calorie needs.

Eating well and being physically active are important factors for a better health. Reducing calories by eating moderate portions and using stevia extract as an alternative sweetener in your foods and beverages can help balance your diet.
