Beverage Manufacturers Can Now Use a Combination of Stevia Extract and Sugar in Brazil

 San Antonio TXThe Global Stevia Institute (GSI)announced that high purity stevia extract has now been authorized in Brazil to be used, in combination with sugar, in low calorie beverages, according to a recent decree passed by the President of the Republic of Brazil.

The Decree No. 8592 states that a manufacturer of non-alcoholic beverage products may now partially replace the sugar in low calorie products with low or no-calorie, natural or artificial sweeteners, together or separately. These products must also add claims such as “low in sugars” or “reduced in sugars” to the front label of the product in accordance with the regulations. The decree stipulates that the sugar reduction must be a minimum of 5 grams in a 200 ml portion. The law applies to non-alcoholic beverages which include nectars, juices, energy drinks, carbonated soft drinks and sport drinks.

The GSI says that until now, beverage manufacturers in Brazil were not allowed to use a combination of sugar plus low or no-calories sweeteners to make reduced-calorie beverages. This limited their ability to provide reduced calorie beverage products to consumers who wanted to help manage their calorie and sugar intake. This new decree gives beverage manufacturers new ingredient tools that can help consumers reduce excess calories and sugars in their diets for weight management or other health benefits.

With this new law, Brazil joins the growing group of countries around the world that use steviaextract as a natural origin, low calorie sweetener in food and beverages. Today high purity stevia extract has been approved for use in more than 65 countries including Japan, Paraguay, Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, China, Russia, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, and Malaysia, among many others in both, Asia and Latin America, as well as in some African countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Morocco and Kenya. In November, 2015, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India, published that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) approved the use of high purity stevia extract for use in several food and beverage products, such as dairy, fruit nectars, jams, jellies and marmalade, ice lollies, ready to eat cereals, beverages, chewing gum and tabletop sweeteners. Also in November, 2015, a guidance for the use of high purity sevia extract was issued in the countries of the Middle East Gulf region with final regulations for sweeteners. According to this guidance of use, stevia extract can be used in the Middle East Gulf region in several food categories such as non-alcoholic drinks, breakfast cereals, bakery products, canned and bottled fruit, jams, jellies and marmalades, nectars and concentrates, confectionary and more.

The stevia extract is used in more than 5000 foods and beverages around the globe today. According to the GSI, stevia extract may be listed differently on labels around the world, due to the different regulations in each country. For this reason, you may see stevia extract listed in the ingredient statement in these ways: SteviaStevia extract, Stevia leaf extract, Steviol glycosides, Rebaudioside A (Reb A), or Stevioside.
