GSI Welcomes New Advisor From The Asia Pacific Region
San Antonio, TX, The Global Stevia Institute (GSI) was launched in June 2010, as an educational resource for health professionals, consumers, food and beverage manufacturers, public affairs leaders and scientists. Since then, the GSI has worked internationally to build awareness about the safety and benefits of steviaextract, the zero calorie sweetener extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana, with science-based information, through education and outreach programs. The GSI is advised by an international board of leading scientists and health professionals.
The GSI Advisory Board is formed by: Keith Ayoob, EdD, internationally known nutritionist, Associate Clinical Professor and author; Margaret Ashwell, OBE, PhD, health specialist and Officer of the British Empire (OBE) for Services to Food; Bernadene Magnuson, PhD, ingredient safety expert, Food Toxicologist, and Associate Professor; Ursula Wölwer-Rieck, PhD, food chemist and tenured academic councilor; and Priscilla Samuel, PhD, Director of GSI, with 25 years of nutrition leadership experience across academia and the food industry.
Today, the GSI officially welcomes Emeritus Professor Dr. Khor Geok Lin from Malaysia to the Advisory Board. She is the retired Dean of the School of Health Sciences at International Medical University, Malaysia and Professor Emeritus of Universiti Putra Malaysia where she was a professor in community nutrition for many years.
Dr. Khor is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and has served as a consultant for the Southeast Asia Nutrition Leadership Program since 2004. She is also currently a scientific advisor of the International Life Sciences Institute Southeast Asia. She was a member of the FAO/UNU World Food Program Technical Advisory group (2004-2014) and a member of the United Nations Systems Standing Committee on Nutrition.
For decades Dr. Khor has contributed significantly to the development and conduct of food and nutrition policy and programs of the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, which includes the National Nutrition Policy, National Plan for Action on Nutrition, Recommended Nutrient Intake, Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents and Nutrition Research Priorities.
Dr. Khor is also a member of the editorial board of several international journals, and serves as the Chief Editor of the Malaysian Journal of Nutrition, the official publication of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia, of which she is a Founding Member, Trustee and Fellow.
