Stevia Extract Pefered by Consumers To Help Reduce Total Calorie and Sugar Intake

San Antonio, TX, Non-caloric, natural origin sweeteners can be an alternative healthier option for weight management and energy intake. These non-caloric sweeteners provide sweetness without the extra calories of sugar.  They could be also a genuine and safe solution, taking into account an increase in chronic illnesses in society today.

The American Heart Association has said that limiting added sugars is a core strategy for maintaining optimum nutrition and a healthy weight. Likewise, the American Dental Association has included limited sugar consumption in their clinical practice recommendations.

The Global Stevia Institute (GSI) says that you can low your energy and calorie intake and manage your weight with stevia extract, a zero calorie sweetener of natural origin, extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. Currently the sweet compounds of the stevia plant, scientifically called steviol glycosides, can be extracted from the leaf and can be used in products to achieve a very similar taste of sucrose, but with no calorie intake.  Stevia extract is up to 350 times sweeter than sugar, but zero calorie. Stevia extract is low in calories because its steviol glycosides are poorly absorbed in the body. They pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract fully intact and are excreted in the urine.

According to a survey performed by the company PureCirclestevia extract is tied as #1 sugar substitute purchased by consumers to help reduce total calorie and sugar intake. Clients in a worldwide famous café were asked about their consumption of sweeteners and sugar intake and 32% answered they were limiting their sugar intake to reduce calories, while 18% answered they would pay a premium for natural sweeteners and 14% were limiting their sugar intake for health reasons.

When they were asked about which sugar substitute they had purchased recently, 25% percent said they have purchased stevia extract, which was the highest percentage for a purchased sugar substitute in the survey. The results of the survey also showed that after sugar and honey, stevia extract is the #3 most preferred sweetener to add to drinks by the café consumers.

Sylvia Klinger, Registered Dietitian of the Hispanic Food Communications Inc. says that you can reduce your energy intake by having foods prepared with stevia extract. But she says that as sugar performs some other functions aside from sweetening things in recipes, such as providing texture while baking, you can use half sugar and half stevia extract to reduce sugar intake. “But at the same time you must be aware that you can also prepare recipes with only stevia extractas well,” says Klinger.
