Stevia Extract in Food and Beverages

San Antonio TXSvetia® Calorie-Free Sweetener is much more than an alternative sweetener; it is part of your daily life. Svetia® is a non-calorie sweetener made from stevia extract and cane sugar obtained from a co-crystallization process patented by Metco Foods Inc. Its main advantage is that it offers an excellent flavor and sweetness.

According to the Global Stevia Institute (GSI) the sweet compounds of the stevia plant – called steviol glycosides – can be extracted from the leaf and can be used in products to achieve a very similar taste of sucrose. Stevia glycosides have additional qualities that are beneficial to manufacturers. They tend to keep the sweetness during normal processing and storage of food and are stable in a wide range of manufacturing conditions. Today stevia extract can be found in hundreds of foods and beverages from around the world, including teas, soft drinks, juices, yogurt, soymilk, baked goods, cereals, salad dressings and candy, as well as a tabletop sweetener.

According to the article Stevia’s star keeps rising: Mintel, by Rachel Arthur, published on the website Food Navigator.com, Mintel, a London-based market research firm, says that the use of stevia extract in nonalcoholic beverage launches increased 487% between 2011 and 2015, with carbonates and RTD iced tea in particular tunring to stevia extract.[1]

The article says that the adoption of sweeteners by the giant beverages companies Coca Cola and PepsiCo (most notably Coca-Cola Life and Pepsi True) has propelled stevia extract further into the limelight. On this regard, David Turner, Senior Food and Drinks Analyst from Mintel, says that stevia extract‘s widespread use in high profile brands such as Coke Life, has made consumers notice that its plant-based origin is a less-artificial ingredient than sweeteners such as aspartame or sucralose.[2]

According to a Mintel, US holds the lead in stevia extract beverage launches. Product launches with stevia extract can be found across food and beverages categories including beverages, snacks, dairy and confectionery. In terms of beverages launches, the US keeps its lead but European countries and other nations are also turning to stevia extract.[3]

As a stevia extract based product, Svetia® Calorie-Free Sweetener can be used as a sweetener in beverages, such as tea and lemonade, or in sauces. You can take it cold, hot or even baked, since it keeps its sweetness and does not change the original taste of food.
