Stevia Extract’s Future Looks Bright
Stevia rebaudiana, support for sugar San Antonio TX. Svetia® Calorie-Free Sweetener is an alternative sweetener of natural origin made of stevia extract and with the great taste of cane sugar, produced by Metco Foods Inc.
Dr. Priscilla Samuel, Director of the Global Stevia Institute (GSI), stated that being a zero-calorie, plant based natural sweetener, stevia extract is a natural-origin sweetener, 350 times sweeter than sugar, which gives it a unique position in the market. She said that to date, an impressive 5000 plus stevia extract sweetened food and beverage products have been launched globally in a relatively short period of time, as the food industry is demanded to be part of the solution in helping to reduce the burden of disease, specially obesity.
Dr. Samuel says that stevia extract is now grown in four continents, and in countries including Paraguay, Argentina, Vietnam, India and the United States. “The opportunity of stevia extract in foods and beverages is still in its infancy. I expect that our scientific learnings about stevia extract will continue to grow and that science and technology will help to bring many more innovations to the marketplace,” she said.
The use of stevia extract in Germany has grown too. Jenny Zegler, global food and drink analyst at Mintel, said for Rachel Arthur in her article Stevia’s star keeps rising: Mintel, that the growth in the use of stevia extract in Germany reflects the European Union’s approval of the zero-calorie sweetener in late 2011 as well as Germany’s fondness for products with health and wellness positioning.
Zegler identifies a number of factors that could prove to work in stevia extract’s favor in the future. “Based on its recent performance, Mintel expects stevia extract to remain a popular sweetener in nonalcoholic beverages in the coming years,” she said. “This is influenced by approval in more countries as well as rising consumer awareness of stevia extract and its natural and zero-calorie status.”
Zegrler thinks that stevia extract may become more of an advantageous ingredient if governments continue to pursue taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages. “In this era of government intervention, stevia extract may become more attractive to manufacturers as well as consumers not only for formulation, but also to help make drinks more affordable than those that are sweetened with sugar and, therefore, may be subject to taxes.”
