What does Acceptable Daily Intake mean?

San Antonio TX.  Svetia® Calorie-Free Sweetener is an alternative, zero-calorie, natural origin sweetener, made of stevia extract and cane sugar as bulking agent or carrier. Stevia extract is extracted from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudianaIt is currently being used in many countries as a sugar substitute.

But ¿how much stevia extract can people consume without any appreciable risk to health?

Bernardene Magnuson, PhD, ATS Fellow at Health Science Consultants Inc. Mississauga, Canada, explains that the ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) is the amount of a specific food ingredient that is considered as safe to consume every day for one’s lifetime. “Stevia extract, as other food ingredients, has an ADI because it is required by the regulatory agencies in order to be legally used in many different countries,” she says. “The use of ADI is to help the regulatory agencies to establish the maximum permissible levels or amounts of ingredients that can be added to different foods. The reason for doing that is to be sure that all the population is unlikely to exceed that permissible level that we know that is safe for them to consume.”

Dr: Sylvia Klinger RD, of Hispanic Food Communications Inc. says that the ADI set for steviol glycosides – the sweet components of the stevia plant that are present in stevia extract – is expressed as steviol equivalents of 4 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day. This equates to approximately 12 mg of high purity stevia extract per kilogram of body weight per day. “So let’s have that a 150-pound (70 kg) person would need to consume approximately 40 packets of a tabletop stevia extract sweetener per day for the rest of their life to reach the ADI,” said Dr. Klinger.

At present, an excellent stevia extract choice to sweeten your food and beverages is Svetia® Calorie-Free Sweetener. Although it contains cane sugar as bulking agent, it only provides so few calories per serving that it perfectly meets the Food and Drug Administration’s criteria for non-calorie foods.
