Stevia Extract Evolution

San Antonio TX.  Stevia extract is a natural-origin, no-calorie sweetener, that has been used for hundreds of years as a sugar substitute, and is now a key ingredient for mayor food and beverage companies. Nowadays an excellent stevia extract option is Svetia® Calorie-Free Sweetener that blends its main ingredient, stevia extract, with cane sugar only as a bulking agent or carrier.

Stevia extract comes from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. More than 200 years ago, the Guaraní people from South America started adding dried stevia leaves to sweeten their traditional drink called yerba mate, as well as teas and medicine. The leaves were also just chewed for their sweet taste. Due to its natural sweetness, the plant was named ka’a he’ê, in the guaraní language, which means sweet herb.

In 1887, the Swiss botanist Moisés Santiago Bertoni started studying the Guarani’s “sweet herb” and observed and first describe its sweet taste in 1899. A year later the Paraguayan chemist Ovidio Rebaudi published the first chemical analysis performed to the plant, where he discovered a glycoside sweetener able to sweeten 200 times more than refined sugar, but without the counterproductive effects sugar produced in the human organism.

In recent year an increasing demand for natural-origin, no-caloire sweeteners has driven stevia extract into the markets.  Through an evolution of stevia extract in cultivation, in harvesting production and in its extraction process, it is nowadays pretty commercial.  The stevia plant is growth throughout the world, its mayor cultivation being in Paraguay, China, Kenya and the United States.

After being extracted from the plant, stevia extract becomes a powder sweetener. Extraction involves zipping stevia extract like a tea, formed with the purified sweet compounds, scientifically called steviol glycosides, which can be 200-300 sweeter than sugar and with a sugar-like taste.

Most people enjoy the sweet taste of cane sugar, but an excessive intake of this sweetener can contribute to overweight and obesity. To help combat overweight and obesity, health professionals recommend to moderate or reduce energy and calorie intake. Svetia® Calorie-Free Sweetener with stevia extract can be used to reduce calories in food and beverages. So replacing or partially replacing cane sugar for stevia extract in your diet can help you manage your weight.

Stevia extract has been rigorously tested in over 200 scientific studies and given the stamp of approval by multiple regulatory organizations around the globe. It is important to say that only high purity stevia leaf extract, but not the whole stevia leaf, has been evaluated and approved for use as an ingredient in food and beverages by multiple regulatory agencies throughout the world.
